One of the central mantras of the green movement is the Three R's: reduce,
recycle, reuse. While this has obvious applications in the material realm -
reducing how much you drive, recycling containers, reusing clothes - to realize
our potential and preserve life on this planet, it's important to apply this
mantra energetically as well. The evolution of the human psyche and our spiritual aspects are dependent upon our growing awareness of reducing negative thoughts, words, and actions; reusing the positive thoughts, words, and actions that bring about growth and positive change; and recycling inspiring ideas and spreading them around the world. If it is true that our external reality is a reflection of our internal reality, and that the macrocosm is contained within the microcosm, then it would behoove humanity to take a look at the internal terrain of the mind and heart and evaluate any poisonous mind-sets that may be lurking there, causing inner pollution that can make its way outward. How can we as a people save this planet from destruction and at the same time save our psyches from self-hate, worry, anger and other negative feelings? How can we compost the negative feelings that consume us to enhance our growth and make fertile soil for new ways of being that are more congruent with the truth of our purest selves? In Earth-minded cultures, rituals are in place to purify the heart and mind. One example is the sweat lodge ceremony, where heat burns through the ego's limited way of being and the inner self is revealed. The innate wisdom of each individual is valued within the context of honoring ancestors and the generations to come. The ceremony offers a reverence for Great Spirit and for Mother Nature that is essential for saving and protecting the planet. Our bodies are worth protecting and honoring as well. When we eat processed food filled with pesticides, genetically modified ingredients, and trans-fats, we are contributing to the toxicity of the planet by contributing to destructive industries and poisoning ourselves. When we choose live, organic foods, we are contributing not only to our own health, but to farmers who are nurturing people, plants, and animals in sustainable and positive ways. As we eliminate toxins from our bodies, minds, and hearts, we become more capable of lovingly connecting with others in positive ways and are more able to appreciate the beautiful world we live in. When people are in great emotional or physical pain they are often unable to see the beauty of life. The desire to think positively, eat healthily, or take action for the Earth diminishes. On the other hand, people who are practicing positive thinking and eating healthy are generally more vibrant and able to make a difference in the world. Their relationships will be more harmonious, and they will have a sense of being an important part of a much larger picture of life. We do make a difference in the world by choosing to take care of ourselves, one another, and the places we inhabit. By applying the Three R's in whatever creative ways we can, materially and energetically, we can live the Green Revolution, healing old wounds and creating a positive future for all. |
